  A Day Getting To Know Hialeah.

Our project focused on the fascinating city of Hialeah, Florida. We were divided into groups, each tasked with presenting different aspects of the city. The first group delved into Hialeah's past and the second group explored migration from 1960 through 1980. Our group presented the current state of the city, and the last group discussed Hialeah's potential future. This comprehensive exploration offered a deep dive into the various elements that shape Hialeah.

The present 

The first group dug into Hialeah's past, starting with its early days as a prairie inhabited by the Tequesta and later the Seminole tribes. The name "Hialeah" means "pretty prairie" in the Seminole language. The city began to take shape in the 1920s when aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss and cattle rancher James H. Bright recognized its potential.The presentations highlighted the socio-political aspects of Hialeah, focusing on key political figures such as Raul L. Martinez, who served as mayor from 1981-1991 and again from 1993-2005, followed by Julio Robaina (2005-2011), Carlos Hernández (2011-2021), and the current mayor, Esteban Bovo. This historical overview provided insight into the city's governance and electoral history, including the establishment of the JFK Library in 1976, a significant voting site.The group also discussed Hialeah's architectural evolution, highlighting the mix of Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, and Mid-Century Modern styles. Iconic landmarks included the Bright House, home of James H. Bright, and the unique Amertec Building, which, despite its abstract design resembling a fish's face, was eventually demolished.

Migration

The second group focused on migration, particularly from 1960-1980, a period that profoundly shaped Hialeah. They began with the Mariel Boatlift of 1980, a critical event that brought a wave of Cuban immigrants, known as "Marielitos," to the United States. This influx significantly altered Hialeah's demographic and cultural landscape.

The presentations highlighted the challenges and opportunities these immigrants faced, including employment in the manufacturing sector and programs aimed at legalizing their status. This wave of migration brought a surge of entrepreneurial spirit which transformed Hialeah into a hub of Cuban-American life.

Present

Our group was tasked with presenting Hialeah's present. However, We decided to create a video presentation to capture the city's dynamic nature. I might add that I possibly underestimated the task of editing this video.. anyhow, let’s continue with the blog.  We began by discussing Hialeah's diverse educational institutions, religious communities, and the current population's demographics we also explored the real estate market, noting the average prices of houses and rents, and the trends shaping the market. Furthermore talked about the historic Seminola neighborhood and the significant role of factories in Hialeah's economy. Hialeah's rich culinary scene was also part of our presentation, influenced by its Hispanic communities, and its vibrant arts districts, such as the Leah Arts District and Garden of the Arts. We concluded with a look at popular events like "Calle 8" and the shopping destinations, including Westland Mall.

The Future

The final group's presentation on Hialeah's future was particularly compelling. They began by addressing current challenges, such as decaying buildings and heavy traffic, and proposed innovative solutions for revitalization and growth. The future of Hialeah includes plans for affordable housing aimed at middle-class families, efforts to revitalize aging infrastructure, and the creation of new job opportunities. Transportation improvements are also on the agenda, with proposals for expanded Metrorail routes, electric scooters, and bicycles to ease traffic congestion. Sustainability initiatives are another focus, with plans for more green spaces, parks, and community gardens. The city is also exploring smart city technologies to enhance public safety, waste management, and overall urban efficiency.


Conclusion

Our exploration of Hialeah was an “eye-opener”(despite our video’s sound quality), revealing the city's rich history, vibrant present, and promising future. We learned about Hialeah's journey from its early days as a prairie, through its development into a Cuban-American cultural hub, to its current status as a dynamic, diverse city. Despite challenges like infrastructure decay, Hialeah's plans for revitalization and innovation demonstrate its ongoing commitment to progress. The "City of Progress" is indeed on a continuous path of transformation, driven by its resilient community and a forward-looking vision. I look forward to seeing how Hialeah evolves and thrives in the coming years.

Weeks ago, we had a new project for the following presentations: the city of Hialeah. The first group presented the city's past; The next group (the second) presented migration in Hialeah from 1960 through 1980 and other points about the city.   Reflection blog 2 To whoever lives in Miami-Dade County, Florida has to know of a city called Hialeah. It is the sixth largest city in Florida with a population 223,109 as of the 2020 census. I would definitely say that Hialeah is one of the cities where there is so much to do and see. Especially when it has so much history that you can learn about. My classmates and I were able to be in groups and be able to show each other the discoveries that we made trying to uncover the past, future, and present.  As we begin to uncover our discoveries I would like to mention that Hialeah is one of the cities that has made so much progress over the years with so much being done with a great community. To anyone who ends up in Hialeah will notice that it is full of people from Cuba. Of course, there are many other nationalities that live there but the major nationality is Cuban.
